Well it's been quite a month. Never do I remember getting this much rain, especially not in one months time. We have had nine inches of rain in the month of May. It's been so great! The grass and hay look amazing. Sure makes a guy feel good about things, as you drive through the cows and watch calves, laying in grass over there backs.
The early calving cows are just wrapping up breeding. This year we ai'ed the cows to Centennial (TCSC 3R) and Duration (TCSC 606S). We walked two bulls this year. Our high selling bull from this years sale to Jack Ziegler at Eastend. (FRL 52U) a centennial son out of a really good OCC Moonshine cow we purchased from Crowfoot. We are very excited to get his first set of calves. Also we walked Rock (CU 074U) an Alliance 6595 son out of a traveler 23-4 dam. We have our first set of calves on the ground this year out of him and they look super.
The summer calving cows are getting close to finishing up and it was a very smooth calving. This year has made me wonder if a guy should even back calving off farther, though we still can get snow in May. Who knows when is the right time in this country. Mark and Bobbie Dean just delivered the bull we bought from them and he looks great! We are going to use him on this group of summer cows this year along with Centennial.I really think he (DEDB 1W) is going to be something special and have not seen many EXT sons that would stand with him. His dam was purchased from us through the Grass Lands sale and is she ever something special (FRL 22P).
We celebrated my daughter Layla's first birthday this year. Wow! How time fly's! I can not believe she is already one. What an exciting time though. Mom and dad are sure enjoying being Grandparents and have been so much help along the way. We could not do it with out them. Dad has been super busy travelling the country working for Lane Realty. There sure is a lot of positive people out there about Saskatchewan and where we are going to go in the next few years. I can not help but feel the same as our land is still relatively cheap and offers so many great options. My wife Claire and a neighbour are starting a day care here on the farm and are very excited about the possibilities of being home and hopefully, providing a little extra cash flow. My mom, brother and I are still working doing construction in Swift with my Grandpa and it has been very busy. Things seem to really be adding up as we have been stuck in basements with all rain. Waiting for sunny days to do all the other stuff we have to do.
We have about half of the Green Feed seeded and Will hopefully get the rest in in the next little while. I am sure glad this year that we are not farming a ton of land anymore as it must be very stressful for some of you out there. The crop should be very good this year though and am excited to hopefully take off eight ton silage! That would be so huge for us.
It's branding season! Something we enjoy so much and our way of trying to give back to any of our bull customers. Last year I went to 32 brandings in all. It's really nice seeing everyone and there calves for the year but does take a lot of time and energy. Brandings have been slowed up by all the rain so this next month should be crazy. Bull customers places we have been to already are Trevor Doerskson, Harry Friesen, Steinley bros, and Troy Ungers. All had really great sets of calves this year. Was nice to see that they all felt there calves were better yet then last year. These guys are great cattlemen who are always working at moving forward.
4-H achievement is coming on the first Sunday of June and it's a very exciting time for our young group of kids we have in the club.I have seen a lot of the steers already and it's going to be a very strong year. We are going to have all Angus Steers in our club this year and will be very good set of steers to line up at the Regional Fair in Swift. There is five steers this year in the club that came from Trevor Doerksons herd sired by FRL bulls! They are all growthy stout steers that should promote the quality of his herd very much.
The custom grazing cows come in on the 20th and hit the grass. They all come from our local vet. What a quality set of cows he has. We will be setting them up the end of June along with our commercial cows and putting in embryo's.
I hope you are having a good spring. Look forward to seeing you around.
